Celebrating children and their rights
20 November is Universal Children's Day, a special day for children and the societies they live in.
Established by the United Nations (UN) in 1954, Universal Children's Day aims to promote the welfare of children everywhere and to encourage understanding between children all over the world. It is also the day when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
Moms and dads, teachers, nurses and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious and community elders, corporate moguls and media professionals as well as young people and children themselves can play an important part in making Universal Children's Day relevant for their societies, communities and nations.
Universal Children's Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build "A World Fit for Children".
Please let UNICEF know if you are planning an event for Universal Children's Day. Send an email to: webkl@unicef.org
