50 YEARS AFTER THE MASSACRE AT THE 1972 MUNICH OLYMPIC GAMES
Carlos Miguel Socias Rodríguez, eyewitness
By Jaime Casanova Martinez
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.- Eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team, five terrorists and a Munich police officer were killed on September 5, 1972, after members of Black September, a Palestinian militant group, stormed the Olympic Village. and take Israeli athletes hostage.
On that occasion the Dominican Republic had a representation in this XX Olympiad, Munich 1972 and specifically the discipline of Judo participated for the first time in these games with Mamoru Matsunaga as coach and the athletes Juan Chalas Jiménez and Carlos Miguel Socias Rodríguez. .
The Dominican delegation had five athletes in the sports of judo, shooting and weightlifting, with Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto as Chief of Mission, Patricio Bosch as secretary, Juan Ulises García Saleta in his capacity as president of the Dominican Olympic Committee to complete the delegation Ervido Creales and Hans Shuber.
Judo returned to the Olympic competitions since it had participated as an exhibition sport in the Tokyo Games in 1964, retiring in the following Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, motivated by the fact that there were no defined rules in this discipline of Jigoro Kano.
Now the athlete Carlos Miguel Socias Rodríguez as an eyewitness tells us the facts as he witnessed them and experienced them firsthand, highlighting images that are part of his experience and that he hopes will not be repeated.
Socias Rodríguez, a native of the Province of Dajabón, was born on November 23, 1952, with his seven (7) siblings Cristina Altagracia, Lidia Mercedes, Bienvenido Arturo, Gladys Leticia, Rafael Arturo, José Francisco and Xiomara and his parents Quisqueya Anacaona and Jesús Bienvenido Socias .
As a youth, he moved to continue his studies at the Loyola Polytechnic Institute in the city of San Cristóbal to immediately start judo practices where he excelled in national and international tournaments under the teaching of his teacher Tokuji Saito.
These feats earned him being selected by the Dominican Kodokan Judo Federation (Fedojuko) as one of two participants after being victorious in a strong eliminatory for these Olympic Games, Munich 1972, being the first time that any Dominican participates in this great world event. .
"On September 4, 1972, we were watching television in the international area of the Olympic Village until around twelve at night and when we were in bed around four thirty in the morning we heard some detonations," says Carlos Miguel.
"Already on September 5 they did not let us leave the room, which is why they brought us food and the information that circulates is that the terrorist group Black September linked to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) led by Yasser Arafat, had stormed the facilities"
"It is said that the kidnappers dressed in sportswear were helped by American athletes to climb through the perimeter fence and enter the village in the early hours of the morning"
"The authorities asked us not to look at the Israeli residence where the kidnappers were because they could be shot and they followed the incidents of the kidnapping of the Israeli athletes through television"
"We were in a 22-story building housed on the 16th floor and at about eleven o'clock at night we saw how two helicopters landed on the esplanade in front of us, at which time the kidnapped Israelis and the kidnappers were transferred in a bus to the air units"
"I received a great impression when the helicopters already with their human load on board passed in their elevation through the 16th floor where we were and I clearly saw all the members of the fateful kidnapping at the same time that the television transmitted the details of the action"
"According to the information that was served, the helicopters transferred them to an airport and there when one of the kidnappers went to inspect the plane that would take them to Egypt where the talks would continue demanding that Israel release more than 200 Palestinian prisoners, realizing that that it was a trap, the snipers shot at them, starting an exchange of bursts and an explosion in one of the helicopters"
"The television announced that the hostages had been rescued, however when we woke them up on the morning of September 6 we found out that they were all dead, 17 people between kidnappers, hostages and policemen"
"That same day the International Olympic Committee, Avery Brundaje, asked everyone to go to the Olympic Stadium to pay tribute to the deceased with the flags of the participating countries halfway up but significantly not that of Palestine"
"The president of the International Olympic Committee indicated that the games should continue restarting the competitions the next day and it was very difficult to enter the town and the competition venues due to the strong restrictions that were imposed that contrasted with the lack of security prior to the games. facts"
"Despite these facts that I had to live, it was a great experience from the beginning of the trip on the route Santo Domingo - Puerto Rico - New York - Frankfurt - Munich and the return Munich - Madrid-Santo Domingo"
In the competitive order I had to compete in a category higher than mine because for some mistake the national authorities enrolled me in that one and the change could not be made, what's more, in order to compete I had to gain weight in a few days to do the lower weight on the scale of the weight division next to me which certainly gave me a great disadvantage in the competition"
"Upon returning to Madrid we spent three days training in the Spanish capital after the scare of having lost my passport to embark in Germany, which I had left in the room I shared with Chalas and Mamoru"
"Given the economic hardships of that time and in order to make the trip, I started a fundraiser because the family conditions were not flattering, so I managed to make some 32 US dollars in contributions, with that money in my pocket, I started the trip"
"From Munich I wrote to my family because I had not had contact with them by any means, so I understood they were very worried when they saw the news of the events in the newspapers and on television"
"The three kidnappers who were imprisoned and released years later because the organization hijacked a Lufthansa plane and put as a ransom the delivery of those sentenced to what Germany obtained," concluded Carlos Miguel Socias.
Today the relatives of the relatives of the victims are reluctant to participate in the act of homage to the victims scheduled for next September 5 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this massacre because they consider that the compensation offered by the German government is an insult According to Ankie Spitzer, a spokesperson for the families as well as the German government informant, Steffen Hebestreit, I very much regret that decision of the relatives.
On the other hand, at the European Championships that just ended in Munich on August 21, the Israeli Maru Teferi, winner of the silver medal in the marathon, dedicated that medal to all the families of the victims and sent her love to everyone. .
"An attack on the Olympic Community and its values," is how the current president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, described the episode 50 years ago.
