Sheikh Ahmad challenges Vizer over SportAccord finances / Sheikh Ahmad cuestiona Vizer sobre finanzas SportAccord

Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC) President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah has made a first public contribution to the ongoing division between SportAccord President Marius Vizer and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
He has asked Vizer how SportAccord and the International Judo Federation (IJF), which he also leads, distribute their finances.
It is clear retaliation on behalf of IOC President Thomas Bach after Vizer demanded that the IOC distributes its revenues in a more transparent fashion.
Sheikh Ahmad, the Kuwaiti powerbroker who also heads the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), reinforced ANOC's "total commitment" to Bach and Olympic Agenda 2020.
He also pledged to "continue to represent and serve transparently the interests of the world’s NOCs".
ANOC is "keeping its distance" from the views expressed by Vizer at the SportAccord Convention in Sochi, he added.
“The Olympic Movement is strongest when it is united," said Sheikh Ahmad.
"There many different stakeholders within the Olympic Family but under the leadership of the IOC we must all collaborate in order to provide the best environment for our athletes.
“The IOC underwent a rigorous process of consultation in 2014 and invited all stakeholders to provide their ideas and their vision for the future of the Olympic Movement.
"Now it is time to put personal matters aside and stand behind the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020 for the benefit and harmony of the Olympic Movement.
“I would like to learn from President Marius Vizer how SportAccord shares its income with the International Sports Federations.
"Also, I would like to understand the International Judo Federation’s method for distributing their revenues to their National Federations, so that our organisations can learn from one and other.
"After all, NOCs and International Sports Federations ultimately share the same foundation which is the National Sport Federations and their athletes so it is vital that we all cooperate with each other."
In his speech in Sochi, Vizer alleged the IOC "lacked transparency", that its Agenda 2020 reform process had brought "hardly any benefit" to sport and that it had unfairly blocked SportAccord in its drive to organise new Commissions and events.
Every Summer Olympic sport body except for the IJF signed a letter supporting the decision of the Association of Summer Olympic International Sports Federations (ASOIF) to "disassociate" its affiliation with SportAccord, while both the International Paralympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation have made a similar move.

A total of 22 Olympic and four non-Olympic sports have also since suspended or withdrawn their SportAccord membership, while Peruvian capital Lima has also withdrawn as host of the 2017 World Combat Games.
But, rather than backing down, Vizer last week published a 20-point agenda, which has been communicated to Bach, Ricci Bitti and the Presidents of all Federations, and covers a wide range of issues.
As well as proposing the introduction of prize money for Olympic athletes, he calls for 50 per cent ownership of the Olympic TV Channel by all International Federations, as well as “complete transparency regarding consultants, wages and contracts”.
Both Bach and Francesco Ricci Bitti, head of ASOIF, have been invited to stage talks for "positive discussions which will lead to tangible solutions", although Bach will consult "key stakeholders", such as his IOC Executive Board colleagues and the likes of Sheikh Ahmad, before accepting the invitation.
The Kuwaiti, a longstanding IOC member and ally of Bach who was also elected a member of the FIFA Executive Committee last month, was once a key supporter of Vizer, with his backing seen as key in Vizer's election victory over the IOC-favoured Bernard Lapasset in the SportAccord Presidential race in 2013.
The two were due to collaborate to organise the first World Beach Games, announced as a joint initiative by SportAccord and ANOC in 2013.
But, after Vizer announced the Games would take place for the first time in Sochi in 2019 last month, the collaboration appears to have ended.
It remains unknown exactly what ANOC's plans are regarding the World Beach Games.
More details are expected at the ANOC Executive Council meeting in Lausanne on June 6.
“Under the leadership of the IOC, ANOC is cooperating and coordinating with other Olympic stakeholders for the new project of the Beach Games," Sheikh Ahmad added today.
"This project will be launched very soon and will serve our athletes and bring benefits to the wider Olympic Movement."

Peru pulls out of hosting Marius Vizer's World Combat Games

LONDON (AP) — The Olympic backlash against Marius Vizer widened, as Peruvian organizers pulled out of hosting one of his showcase multi-sports events and basketball became the latest federation to suspend ties with his umbrella body.
The Peruvian Olympic Committee notified Vizer it was withdrawing as host of the 2017 World Combat Games following his recent attacks on the IOC and President Thomas Bach, according to a letter obtained Sunday by The Associated Press.
The games are owned and overseen by Vizer's SportAccord, which represents Olympic and non-Olympic federations. The 10-day event had been scheduled to be held in Lima and feature 16 combat and martial sports.
The decision follows the withdrawal of several Olympic sports from the combat games, including boxing, wrestling, taekwondo and weightlifting. They broke or suspended ties with SportAccord after Vizer blasted Bach and the International Olympic Committee in a speech in Sochi, Russia, last month.
In his letter to Vizer, Peruvian Olympic chief Jose Quinones Gonzalez said sponsors have also withdrawn their support for the combat games. He also noted that Peru sided with the IOC in the conflict with Vizer and SportAccord.
"The Peruvian Olympic Committee is an integral part of the Olympic Movement," Gonzalez wrote. "Therefore it supports the International Olympic Committee and the reforms of Agenda 2020, which have been widely consulted and agreed with all members."
"For these reasons," he added, "we are sure to have your comprehension and gentle understanding of the current situation that much to our regret makes infeasible the realization of the World Combat Games in our country."
The letter did not mention another vital element: Lima was chosen in December to host the IOC meeting in 2017 where the host city of the 2024 Olympics will be selected.
Vizer, who also heads the international judo federation, has been left increasingly isolated since sharply criticizing the IOC and Bach in his opening speech at the SportAccord convention in Sochi. Among other things, Vizer called the IOC system "expired, outdated, wrong, unfair and not at all transparent" and said Bach's "Olympic Agenda 2020" reform program was of little use to the federations.
International basketball federation FIBA has suspended its membership in SportAccord, spokesman Patrick Koller told the AP on Sunday, becoming the 21st Olympic sport to walk away so far from Vizer's organization.
Peru's withdrawal as host of the combat games came less than two weeks after Vizer issued a statement saying the event would go ahead despite the withdrawal of several sports. He said the games would generate more than $20 million in revenues for participating federations.
Boxing, taekwondo, wrestling, weightlifting, fencing and judo were the six Olympic sports scheduled to be on the combat games program. Among the non-Olympic sports on the program were karate, sumo, kickboxing, aikido and ju-jitsu.
Previous World Combat Games were held in Beijing in 2010 and St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2013.
Vizer's plans to launch the inaugural World Beach Games in 2017 also now look in danger of being thwarted.
Vizer sent Bach a letter last week proposing a meeting to clear the air. On Thursday, he sent Bach a 20-point "reform agenda" that, among other things, calls for the introduction of prize money in the Olympics.
Franceso Ritti Bitti, head of the association of summer Olympic sports, told Vizer in a sharply-worded letter Friday to stop speaking on behalf of the federations, saying he does not represent their views and has shown a "lack of understanding" of the Olympic movement.

Truth 'too shocking' for IOC but pressure must stop: Vizer

SportAccord president Marius Vizer has urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to end pressure on federations to withdraw their membership of his organization after he criticized the Olympic body last month.
Vizer, who heads the international judo federation and the umbrella body SportAccord, which has about 100 sports federations as members, had accused the IOC of being dated, blocking new events and lacking transparency among other things.
Since Vizer's scathing attack at the SportAccord convention, which he said was probably "too shocking" for the IOC, more than a dozen Olympic federations, including athletics, boxing, archery, taekwondo, triathlon, hockey and wrestling, have left, saying his comments did not represent them.
"I had expected more solidarity from international federations, specifically from summer Olympics federations, because I spoke out in the favor of the sport," Vizer told Reuters in an interview.
"I did not attack (IOC president Thomas) Bach or the IOC. But it is up to the federations to decide what they consider the best for their situation and their sports community," said Vizer.
SportAccord, which also hosts smaller multi-sports events like the World Combat Games, is not hugely important for major sports such as athletics, whose financial dependence on the Olympics and their promotion through them is critical.
But for smaller federations and especially those who are not part of the Olympics, SportAccord is key to generating new revenue streams, showcasing the sport and increasing participation.
IOC PRESSURE
The sudden exodus of federations in recent weeks, however, was not because of what he said but because of IOC pressure, Vizer added.
"That is my opinion and I am really convinced of that," he said, adding it was only following a coffee break long after his speech that federations started to oppose his comments once they had discussions with the IOC.
"What I expressed with my voice was the long-time opinion of my colleagues. It was never clearly expressed at an important occasion. I did it and probably it was too shocking for them (IOC)," he said.
"I was straight and direct and I feel that president Bach has stayed just behind all the story, in the shadows."
Vizer has written to the IOC chief, asking for a meeting to clear the air.
"I am open to meeting with president Bach to discuss (things) with him. Everything I want is for the benefit of sports. Just because the IOC is the most important sports organization does not mean it is perfect."
"Things can be changed and values can be increased, transparency can be adapted," he said.
The IOC said on Wednesday Bach had responded to Vizer's request with a letter of his own, without giving more details.
"We read Mr Vizer’s comments... in the media," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "The IOC President has responded directly to this letter before making any public comment."
According to some Olympic officials it is likely Bach will want to discuss the matter with stakeholders and his executive board before setting up a meeting.
NO PUNISHMENT
Vizer said he would urge Bach to allow people to speak up instead of fearing punishment.
"In the international sports movement and Olympic movement everybody is free to speak and if somebody has a voice he should not be punished, he should be listened to."
"They (IOC) did not analyze my proposals but just took measures to punish me because I expressed a voice on behalf of me and millions of sports people."
But it is not only SportAccord membership that has been affected with the World Combat Games 2017 in Lima, Peru, seeing several Olympic federations pull out.
"I hope the pressure will not continue because I have felt it for more than one year since Bach has been president (since 2013). The World Combat Games are a complementary event. It just creates additional benefits," said Vizer.
"We have the opportunity to replace those federations with others which have sent in applications. We will have the number of federations, no doubt, but I regret the decisions to withdraw."
