JUDO AFTER THE OLYMPIC GAMES; AND NOW THAT?
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.- After the judo competitions of the XXXII Olympiad, Tokyo 2020 that take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021 I had to make an extensive count to assert and support our article of July 22 under the title "THE World Judo in a Lethargy"
In the reference article we indicated that it was guaranteed that the European continent would achieve the highest number of medals in the Jigoro Kano discipline given that its athletes were more than fifty percent of the total number of participants.Today we see how of the sixty medals in dispute where individual and team competitions are included, the Europeans won with 33 medals and 55% of the total followed by Asia with 22 medals and 36.67% and America rose 5 times to the podium to 8.33%; first, second and third, respectively.
We should note that Japan, the cradle of judo, obtained 12 medals corresponding to the Asian continent, representing more than half of those achieved by Asia as a whole.
Needless to say, of the continents of Africa and Oceania that it was not possible to put a number to the house overwhelmed by the large number of European athletes benefited from the Olympic quotas that were snatched to other continents and that also the qualifying events have the venues in places practically inaccessible for athletes from Africa, America and Oceania, mainly, and from many Asian countries. Already in the course of the development of the event we saw a totally erratic refereeing where he highlights the ineffectiveness of a central referee who is attentive to the earpiece placed in his ear that does not allow him to concentrate and disconnects him from the follow-up to the combat, confirming that the withdrawal of the referees from the corners has been disastrous.
On the other hand, there is the Golden Score situation where a large number of fights were over 10 minutes, thus showing the inability of managers to define and enable an effective method to break ties. How is the physical condition of an athlete who competed more than ten minutes for the next match?
The refereeing marks left much to be desired as athletes who made ippon, full point, the opposing competitor was compensated with a lower score such as waza ari avoiding a winner to be able to later visualize a tie or another Golden Score. And it is that judo in its eagerness to differentiate itself from other sports has lost its essence since the current leadership of the International Judo Federation (FIJ) took over it, starting democracy in this entity in 2007.
A few months ago we rejoiced at the separation of the hitherto Director of Refereeing of the International Judo Federation for the unconsulted manner of handling this neuralgic area for almost two decades, but it is no less true that this dismissal should have been made after these games had ended. due to their size and the experience accumulated by this character in previous versions consecutively.
Nowadays the IJF refereeing direction is managed by ex-athletes, exalted, but whose mentality is limited to competition, and the administration of justice has and should have other components to be egalitarian, which today is conspicuous by its absence.
As a point to highlight is the implementation of the mixed team competitions,
which began with the impulse that the Pan American Judo Union (UPJ) gave it at
the time and likewise the Kata competitions and the implementation of the video delay, All-Star team etc.
We already called it the judo of the International Federation sleeps a long lethargy because its mourners, the National Federations, are at the feet of those who made them countless promises that they have not kept.
