2018 Brazilian National Judo Championships and South American Championships are huge sucess
More than a thousand athletes from Brazil and South America were present for the Brazilian Judo National
Championships and the South-American Judo Championships in the city of Mariana, Brasil.
The unprecedented partnership between the Judo National League of Brazil and the South American Judo
Confederation was a great success and produced a monumental event with 1400 athletes fighting in the
eleven competition areas set up in the Mariana Arena last weekend (NOV/23-24).
The coveted titles of National Champion of Brazil and South American Champion raised the stakes and the
delegations brought their best athletes to fight, who in turn brought their best techniques and strategies. In
addition to high level of combats in the division from 13 years old onwards, the festival for young judokas
drew attention to the commitment and determination of the future of the sport.
In contrast to the high speed judo movements of the shiai, the kata championships definitely brighten the
event. Presented in pairs and in prearranged movements, judo kata retain the essence of the martial art
created by Master Jigoro Kano almost 140 years ago.
Both the Judo National League of Brazil and the South American Judo Confederation are affiliated to the
Pan-American Judo Union and World Judo federation.
President of the Judo National League of Brazil, Galileu Paiva, said
"We take the WJF “Judo fo All” ideal very seriously. Judo is instrumental in the betterment of people and in
providing opportunities they would not have otherwise. This is why we work so hard to make events like
these possible and accessible to all."
President of the South American Judo Confederation, Luiz Pavani, said
"Impeccable organization, high quality awards and respect for the athletes were some of the highlights that
set this event apart and were instrumental for its success, guaranteeing a comeback in 2019 in the city of
Uberaba, Brazil"
